Myotragus Balearicus

The “Balearian mouse-goat” or also known as the Balearic Islands cave goat, was a species of the subfamily Caprinae which lived on the islands of Majorca and Menorca until its extinction around 5,000 years ago. This species have been collected from the excavation of Holocene cave sediments in Cova Estreta.

Miss Bate had discovered bones of this ruminant during her wanderings through the Mediterranean. She immediately noted that the skeletal evidence had characteristics found in Bovid ruminants, such as cattle, sheep and goats – notably the presence of horns.
